Black Ice is an age - old phenomenon. Black Ice is frozen water - either sleet or rain or melted snow - that freezes as a sheet and is not visible as ice. Black Ice is hard to detect. Black Ice is thin, new ice on fresh or salt water that appears dark in color because of its transparency. Black Ice is a thin layer of ice covering roads, perhaps only in shadowed areas that can be one of the most insidious winter risks to deal with. Black Ice is called black, because it takes on the color of the underlying pavement.
I encountered Black Ice one winter morning on my way to work. I couldn't walk two steps without falling. The strange thing about this phenomenon was I couldn't see the ice that was under my feet. I learned to respite Black Ice that day. I didn't like slipping and sliding and falling. Now when I hear a warning of black Ice I'm aware and careful.
That's how it is in our figure skating community, we are so busy practicing and preparing for competition and the competitors, that we know about, that we don't always prepare for what we perceive as no competition or not a true competitor. That's how upsets happen !
I call my site Black Ice because I want to spotlight minority skaters and coaches that perhaps, to the skating community, because of the enormous amount of figure skaters and coaches, may be invisible. Their talent, although there, to the average figure skating fan is hard to detect. These skaters are in the shadows now, BUT just as Black Ice is dangerous, and should not be dismissed, these skaters, should not be dismissed. They have talent, grace and skill, and will be a force to be recognized. They will cause many upsets to happen.
Black Ice isn't to define one minority. Black Ice defines every minority. It is created and dedicated to the love of the sport and is designed to celebrate and spotlight the artistry, talent, power and strength of minority figure skating and minority coaches and those that help support the sport.
